Writing doesn’t have to be a chore—it can be full of laughter, creativity, and a little bit of randomness! If your kids love silly stories, this Strange Sentences activity is a fantastic way to get them writing while having fun.

What is the Strange Sentences Activity?

This game uses a simple chart and a die to create wacky, unexpected sentences. Kids roll the die multiple times to generate a sentence structure based on categories like Who/What, Did What, Where, and When. The result? Hilariously unexpected combinations like:

➡️ A polar bear ate raw fish on an iceberg in January!
➡️ A robot lost a part on a spaceship during lunch!
➡️ A rock star sang a song on television last night!

This element of chance and surprise keeps kids engaged and eager to see what they’ll come up with next.

Two children crouch over a large grid paper, drawing with markers. A book with cabin art lies beside them on a wooden floor.
The kids enthusiastically design a game board on paper, filled with creative drawings and captions, bringing their imaginative world to life.

How to Play:

1. Set up the chart – Create a table with four columns: Who/What, Did What, Where, and When (or use the example from the book!).

2. Let the kids brainstorm words for each category—this is a great way to get the littles involved! The sillier, the better—ours came up with ‘poop’ and ‘blobfish,’ and it made the game even more fun!

3. Roll the die – Kids roll the die once for each column, matching the number to the corresponding phrase.

4. Write the sentence – Once they’ve rolled all four times, they put their sentence together.

5. Illustrate it! – Kids can draw a picture of their strange sentence to bring it to life.

6. Keep going! – They can repeat the process and even staple their sentences together into a mini-book of wacky stories.

Why This Works for Learning

✔️ Encourages Creativity – The unpredictable results spark imagination and storytelling.

✔️ Builds Sentence Structure Skills – Helps kids naturally understand how sentences work.

✔️ Boosts Confidence in Writing – No pressure for “perfect” sentences—just fun experimentation.

✔️ Engages Reluctant Writers – Kids who resist writing often enjoy rolling the dice and playing with words.
